Extra Art Projects

Since living in Ho Chi Minh City Jack has self initiated and ran woodcut workshops for adults across the city. Encouraging participation from both the expat and the local community.  These workshops are a chance for creative individuals to share the experience of learning a new craft. All participants are encouraged to bring an idea to the table then draw, carve and print the block in the same afternoon. Using examples of his own work, previous student's examples and his own knowledge of the medium Jack guides them by giving them new techniques and methods to experiment with.

For the last 3 years he has also worked closely with Vietnam Australia International School (VAS) to create their summer school art program. His main responsibilities are designing all content, material stocks, recruiting and training teachers whilst teaching specialist workshops for students from as early as kindergarten up to upper secondary and generally overseeing the implementation of the program.

For his school programs he aims to bring unique, interesting and usually unseen before processes in a school environment such as various printmaking processes like frottage, relief, mono, 3D art and many more! All with an environmental underlying message.

Unfortunately due to school policies no photos of these projects can be displayed on this site.

Woodcut Printmaking Workshops for all ages

Over the last 8 years Jack has been organising workshops for adults and children across the country. He started on his rooftop in Dien Bien Phu street and has hosted them at many venues and schools since. He also works directly with international schools to provide creative curriculum development advice and has run multiple art summer camp courses with the Vietnam Australia International school across 5 campuses teaching nearly 3000 students.

If you would like to organise a workshop for your school or company we can tailor the theme to fit your needs and will provide all materials on the day.

British International School, Thao Dien - Ocotber 2023

On Friday 13th October as part of their 'International day' to celebrate multiculturalism across HCMC we were invited to host a series of special workshops for 150 students from years 7, 8 and 13!

Our final piece was a 1.6m x 2.4m jigsaw canvas map of Saigon that celebrated culture through different painting styles from across the globe!

The Saint Ange French International School District 2, July 2023

We hosted a whole morning art workshop class for grade 5 students to learn the art of relief printmaking. The session started with a printmaking demonstration and then each student created their own relief print and also tried out multi-layer reduction printing.

Saigon South International School, January 2023

We had the pleasure of teaching a full day of creative workshops to the whole year group of 135 grade 4 students at Saigon South International School. We started the day with an artist talk that detailed my artist career and how I became a full time artist living in Vietnam. Then, we looked at traditional Dong Ho printmaking from north Vietnam and their processes and themes. We also talked about landforms in Vietnam and how these can influence culture.

After the artist talk each class came in for a 90 minute workshop where they used traditional printmaking techniques to create their own contemporary prints inspired by modern day photographs from across HCMC.

British International School, Thao Dien, November 2022

We were very fortunate to be invited into the British International School, HCMC to teach all 200 grade 9 students the art of woodcut printmaking. The theme was 'expressionist self portraits' and they each made a 10 x 10cm woodblock and many prints. We had great fun learning about colour gradations, mixing inks directly on the block and different carving techniques to produce expressive marks.

Most schools will teach printmaking but usually shy away from woodcut as it is more demanding to achieve good results! We have found the students much prefer the carving actions of using actual wood to lino or soft carve plate alternatives. The results speak for themselves! All these prints were made in a single 90 minute session of 45 students in each group.

Happiness Saigon - August 2022

'Happiness Saigon' is a creative consultancy agency based in district 7 HCMC. They are a team of super talented creatives whose mission is to bring positive energy and creativity to all projects they are involved in. They contacted us to host a special workshop event for their 45+ team of employees. We supplied all the materials for a happiness themed workshop that explored what happiness meant to each of the participants and also how to use the expressive limitations of the medium of woodcut printmaking to increase creativity and originality.

Australian International School (AIS), District 2, HCMC

In this project we worked with grades 4 + 5 to teach a basic introduction to relief printmaking. We looked at the indigenous art of Australia as well as Vietnamese tiles to inspire the students creatively and the school's teachers also introduced them to pop art at a similar time. After an introductory printing session with all 8 classes of 25 students we printed these awesome portraits of the students to go up as a permanent display at the school.

Minh Tran Event Space x Saigon Print Shop

The first of many collaborations between Minh Tran company and our gallery to host unique, artist experience workshops for adults and families to collaborate with their children and have a day out from the stress of city living. This unique venue is situated in Tan Binh district but once you enter the 12,000 square feet of enclosed wildlife + nature you would of thought you were in the countryside.

January 2019, 2020, 2021 + 2022 - Lycée Français International Marguerite Duras

For the last 4 years we have been invited to host a series of printmaking workshops from grades 4-10. There are two sessions, in the first I give an artist talk and the students printed their own prints from my woodblocks to keep and in the second session the primary students make and print their own foam board design whereas the secondary students make woodcut prints.

There are always great results and next school year we will be back for more printmaking fun!

The American School - District 2 - HCMC - April 2021

We were very please to have been invited by the history teacher of this school to deliver an artist experience workshop to 60 high school students under the theme of 'global issues'. Relief print has long been used as an affordable method of reproduction to express political views and ideologies and also to spread awareness of certain issues to a wider audience. This made it a perfect for these students who created their own design togo alongside their essay project.

Woodcut Workshops at Hem Chill - D2, Thao Dien - May 2021

Anantara Hotel / Art Space - Hoi An February 2021

Continuing our great work relationship with the Anantara hotel we hosted two introductory woodcut workshops in their art space which was a great success! The workshops were open to all ages and we provided all the materials including easy to engrave, foam board for younger students whereas the adults created woodcuts using sharp tools.

The Workshop / Danang - February 2021

Common 9 Bar - Woodcut workshop June 2020

The first in a series of short introductory woodcut printmaking workshops for adults.

Change VN / Wild Aid Vietnam - Creative workshops

In May 2019 I was personally invited to join 'Wild Aid Vietnam' and 'Change VN's' project to help spread animal awareness issues particularly focused on the elephant, pangolin and the rhino. The other guys painted murals up and down the country whilst I joined for the Nha Trang date to give a workshop to 20+ students from the local youth. It was great fun! I hope to join these positive events in the future.
