Jack Clayton — Artist Biography

Jack Clayton is a British printmaker and illustrator who has made Ho Chi Minh City his home since 2012. His work sits at the intersection of two ancient printmaking traditions — the bold graphic language of European Expressionism and the intricate compositional beauty of Japanese Ukiyo-e — filtered through more than a decade of living, working and observing in one of Southeast Asia's most dynamic cities.

Clayton studied Graphic Arts and Design at Leeds Metropolitan University before undertaking a short residency at the Frans Masereel Centrum in Belgium — one of Europe's most respected centres for woodcut and printmaking. It was there that he deepened his understanding of experimental printmaking processes and found the medium that would define his practice. Inspired by Masereel's own tradition of narrative image-making, Clayton went on to develop a highly personal visual language rooted in place, pattern and story.

Before settling in Vietnam, Clayton spent two years in Australia — living and working in Melbourne and spending three formative months in Kakadu National Park, where his encounters with indigenous art left a lasting impression. The hidden narratives embedded in patterns and details, the way meaning could be layered beneath a surface — these ideas never left him, and their influence can be felt throughout his work today.

A four-month journey through Southeast Asia in the early 2010s brought him to Vietnam, and Ho Chi Minh City in particular captured him immediately. After several years teaching English and rediscovering his artistic practice, he committed fully to life as an artist in 2019 — opening his own gallery studio in the ground floor of his family home in Khanh Hoi, District 4.

His illustration style is distinctive and immediately recognisable — he plays deliberately with scale, form and pattern to bend the viewer's perception, drawing the eye through carefully constructed narratives rather than simply depicting a scene. Each piece rewards close attention; the longer you look, the more you find. Major illustration projects include the Dong Son Drum Triptych — three reimagined ancient drum faces exploring the history of North, Central and Southern Vietnam — and the Saigon Compass, first created in 2015 as Clayton's personal attempt to understand his new environment, and revisited in 2025 as a fully updated exploration of modern HCMC's districts and identity.

His woodcut prints are made entirely by hand — every block hand-carved from his own illustrations, every print hand-burnished without a press. He frequently employs the reduction method, pulling multiple layers of colour and depth from a single piece of wood in a process that makes each print genuinely unrepeatable. Works are signed, numbered and issued as limited editions.

Over his career Clayton has built an impressive body of commissioned and exhibited work. He has created 16 commissioned pieces for Mekong Capital's offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and in 2024 was invited to run a bespoke workshop experience at Christian Dior on Dong Khoi Street — one of the city's most prestigious addresses. For seven years he designed and led the Art and Craft department for Vietnam Australia International School, developing the programme across six campuses and reaching nearly 3,000 students annually. He has exhibited in two solo shows in Hoi An (2019 and 2023) and exhibits regularly in Hanoi with Work Room Four Gallery.

Today, Clayton works from his gallery studio in Khanh Hoi Ward, which occupies the ground floor of his family's five-storey Vietnamese townhouse. Visitors are welcome to walk in, browse the collection and watch the artist at work. The gallery carries original woodcut prints, limited editions and digital reproductions, with worldwide shipping available through Cohart. It is open Thursday to Sunday, 12pm–6pm, and by appointment at other times.

His work is held in private collections worldwide — brought home by travellers, collectors and anyone who wanted to take a piece of Vietnam with them that was made with genuine craft, curiosity and care.
